The Women Cell, Fatima College (Autonomous),Madurai has been creating awareness among women ,encouraging and motivating them to be independent. Women Cell with renewed zeal and commitment has sketched the following action plan for the academic year 2007-2008:
Empowering women in rural community—In collaboration with WEAT Women Cell has adopted villages with rural population.
Equipping the students to prepare washing detergent, bathing soap, Neelam, juice, and teaching them the art of glass painting through peer teaching so as to pass it on to the rural women and thus creating awareness and motivating them to become small-scale entrepreneurs.
Assisted by the non-governmental organizations like SOCO, DHAN and People’s Watch students of the women cell will be informed of the various problems women face in reality and legal avenues to solve them will be suggested.
Women Cell will educate the students about the fundamental rights of women and will also make them realize the challenging avenues available for deciding their career and higher education. Students will be exposed to specific health issues and will be guided to maintain good health profile.

Fundamental rights of women:
Rights to equality: The constitution of India does guarantee Equality between sexes and grants certain specific favours to Women.
Rights to Education: Every one has the right to education.
Rights to Property: No person shall be deprived of his Property saved by authority.
Rights to Freedom of Speech and Expression: All citizens Shall have the right to freedom of speech and expression.
Violence against women trends, issues and action strategies:
Ways to prevent child/ Adolescent sexual abuse.
To take action against sexist portrayed of women in the
Audio visual media and cyber crime.
Sexual harassment at work place.
Empowering Women:
Exposure to self help groups
Motivating the students to become entrepreneurs.
Women & Health:
To give awareness about health profile of women.
Women and Consumer affairs:
To enlighten the students about their rights as women Consumers.
To create an awareness of the salient provisions of the Consumer Act which protect women consumers.
Report of the activities: 2006-2007
The total number of women’s cell member is 195 and there are 5 staff advisors. The Program of women’s cell is designed on the basis by the expection and suggestions given by the students to make it more participative. The women’s to cell activities for the academic year 2006-2007 started with a feed back session on 13.7.2006. The staff advisors gave an orientation to the students regarding the aims, objective and also discussed on the activities for the year 2006-2007. With the arrival of I year students , Mr.Thirukumaran Formally inaugurated the Part-IV activities on 27.7.06. His talk motivated the students to take up interest in part IV activities. Students were self-defence training by professional who gave teekwondo, Korean martial art, karate practice to our students on 10.08.06.
On 17.8.2006 a debate was conducted in which the students were allowed to talk on sexual harassment. The debate was a great success since all the students enthusiastically Participated in the debate.
On 24.0.2006. Mr.Muthukrishnan, a journalist and a free lance writer, addressed the students on the topic “Role of women in communal harmony” He screened 3 documentary movies to the students.
On 31.8.2006, Stuidents were divied into groups and were asked to prepare street play on issues related to women. Students’s performance was starting.
On 01.7.2006, the college celebrated Inter Religious Harmony Day , which a Buddist monk Biku had invited to address thye gathering.
On 7.9.2006, in relation to the Inter Religious Heramony week, oratorical competition was held by wopmen’s cell. Winners were given away with prizes.
The women’s cell students were given chart work on 14.9.2006 to Portray the problems of women in the Modern world. All the chart were displayed to the whole college by tying the chart around the trees.
On 28.9.06, Ms.Aruna a social done against women”. The scintillating talk created sparks in the hearts of students.
On 30.9.2006, peace Rally was conducted from kalarasal to Fatima College.
On 5.10.2006, a talk was given by Ms.Selva Gomathy, a leading lawyer from socotrust, on “Laws and Rights for Women”.
The next activity was a discussion in which the students were allowed to talk on “the impact of television serials on women”. It was a hot argument.
On Sep 26- a talk by Tamil Ramesh had been arranged. He gave a speech on “Public speaking and confidence Building”.
Yet another session was conducted on “elimination of violence against women”- a day was celebrated. Competitions like Group song, pencil drawing, oratory were conducted.
First December , the college celebrated “AIDS Awareness Day”
On 14.12.2006, In relation to the AIDS Awareness Day, a cycle rally was conducted in which many of our students participated and the rally ended in cholavandan.
25.1.2007 women’s cell participated in Abstinence club which was conducted by the college.
On 1.2.2007, Ms Lucia vanitha of commerce department addressed the students on women’s & consumer affairs”
On 15.2.07, the day was marked by the discussion on “The hurdles and haxards women face in the path of success”.
8th March was celebrated as International women’s day for which Hon’ble Ms.Justice K. Suguna, High court Madras, was the chief guest she addressed the students on the importance of Being a women.
Women’s cell conducted one-day camp in Aalampatti, near MK university on 18.3.06.
Women’S Cell 2007-2008
The activities of Women’s Cell for the academic year 2007-2008 commenced with a formal orientation to the students. Mr. Henry Tiphagne, Director, ‘People’s Watch’ was the Chief Guest for the orientation.
On 05.07.07, a Blood Donation programme was organized. Mrs. Yazhini, a medical student addressed the gathering on the importance of donating blood – the life saving mechanism. The office bearers were elected for the better functioning of the Cell.
A session on “Confidence Building” was conducted on 19.07.07. The staff-in-charge of Women’s Cell enlightened the students on the topic through interesting exercises.
Ms. Maria, Lecturer, Department of English, gave a lecture on “Public Speaking” on 26.07.07.
“Hiroshima Day” was observed on 09.08.07. The members of Inter religious Communal Forum headed by Fr. Gnana Prakasam addressed the gathering on the disasters of war and the need for harmony and peace.
On 16.08.07, the students were informed about the village visit and were motivated to serve their fellow beings. The students were guided to prepare charts and cultural programmes for the village visit.
Lecture on “Public Speaking” was continued by Ms. Maria on 23.07.07.
On account of “World Literacy Day”, the students actively participated in Cycle Rally on 08.09.07. The students went to Paravai and enlightened the public on the right and need for women’s education.
On 30.08.07 and 13.09.07, the students gave public speech on various social issues.
On 27.09.07 and 11.10.07 Ms.Diana, Lecturer, Dept. of Tamil, enlightened the students on “Women‘s Rights.”
A debate was conducted among the students on 17.10.07. The topic was
“Who violate women’s rights - Men or Women?” The students actively participated and expressed their views on the topic.
On 24.10.07, Peer group educators from Hi-Tech Arai, headed by Mrs. Nalini, gave an awareness programme on AIDS. The session was quite informative with graphical and pictorial presentations of details about AIDS.
On 29.11.07,The Women’s Cell students staged a skit on account of “National Integration Week” They arranged themselves in the form of India outline.
On December 10, 2007 on account of Human Rights Day students formed a human chain and shouted slogans. The Womens’ Cell and AICUF students enacted a street play named, “ Manudam Vellum “which proved to be an eye opener for all.
The students presented the various human rights related issues on 13.12.07.
