DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY

Vision and Objectives:

The department of Sociology right from its inception in 1960, has been striving for the development of integrated personality of the students, preparation of the students to meet the challenges of life and develop their capacity for critical analysis of social issues and facilitation of the students for playing key roles in national development. The department is happy to note that its efforts have yielded good results with many of the alumnae occupying responsible positions and everyone passing out of this Department doing full justice to whichever position she occupies.
AIM OF THE DEPARTMENT:
-Holistic preparation of the students for a successful life
- To become socially sensitive and responsible citizen
- To develop the skills of the students in both academic and extra- curricular activities
-To reach National Development through individual development.
COURSES OFFERED BY THE DEPARTMENT:
  • B.A. - Sociology with Computer Applications -2009 onwards
  • Masters in Social Work (MSW) (2005 onwards) with specializations in Medical and Psychiatric social work , Community Development and Human Resource Development.
  • Certificate Course in Sociology of Family
  • Skill Based paper in Counseling
Milestones of the Department
1995 - Vocationalisation of the course with   the introduction of computer papers.
Introduced Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for Higher Education.
 2003 – Introduced Internship Programmes for the students in various Non-governmental organizations
2004 – Reframed the Computer Papers to equip students with the Global competition                 in the IT field. (HTML & FLASH)
2005 – Long cherished dreams of the Department became a reality with the Introduction of MSW – Master of Social Work with specializations in Community Development, Medical and Psychiatric Social Work.
2009 – Change of Nomenclature from B.A, Sociology to B.A, Sociology with Computer Applications for better employability of the students.
 
 
 
EXTENSION ACTIVITIES:
The department encourages extension activities with the following objectives :
* To gain practical knowledge
* To sensitize students about social issues
* To equip them with professional skills and extend their Services to the marginalized groups
Periodically the students will involve themselves in
         Rejuvenating Juvenile Delinquents
         Peer Interaction with Inmates of Helen Keller Society.
         Peer Teaching in Govt. Middle School at Siruvallai Village
         Mentoring the children in ABODE and academically assisting them in their studies.
Highlights of the Department
         Organize Need Based Awareness Programmes and Camps after village survey in collaboration with Placement Agencies (Individual/Group)
         Department of Sociology Organised U.G.C Sponsored National Seminar on “Gender Discrimination in Families” in 2000.

         Organised fact finding Group to study about fire Accident at Mental Asylum – Erwadi,on 8th August 2001. Press release was made on the same.
Organized one-day International workshop on “Feminization of Poverty – A Global Perspective” at Fatima College on 02.12.2005 by Emile Mayor
Data collection on “Religious Experience”   in Tamil Nadu- Collaboration with Hardy Association of Wales University, UK. In 2006.
International Interactive Session with the Students of Switzerland and Japan on “Women Issues and Non-Violencein 2006
 
Department of Social Work organized National Seminar on “Marginalized Groups: Aged and Children” in 2007.
SOCIAS – Inter Collegiate Meet Every Year.
Organized 2 Days U.G.C Sponsored National  Seminar on 10th and 11th July,2008 -           “Human Rights – A move to Societal Equity”
Organized Grandma’s Fest on 7.10.2009, to sensitize the students regarding Elderly women’s problem of adjustment and accommodation in the contemporary trend of the family system.

Punitha , Uma Maheswari and Priyadharshini –P.G degree at J.N.U. Delhi.
R. Maheswari won Gold Medal for Guard of Honour in Delhi
V.P. Gomathy represented AICUF, Tamilnadu in the Celebrations of World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany
A. Priya Dharshini was the best cadet in N.C.C. Camps at Sikkim, Mysore and Visakapattinam.
Jeya Nisha represented AICUF, Tamilnadu in the Celebrations of World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany
Sri Ganga participated in the Youth parliament in University level.
The under graduate programme is unique, incorporating the essential theoretic inputs together with field study programmes and a research study as practical components. The Department periodically revise and updates its curriculum.
